COMPARATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY BETWEEN THE ISLANDS OF HAWAII AND THE BALEARICS
The project was carried out in 2000 by Ben Beeckmans, President of ECOCIENCIA and Monica Ratón Martínez, of the "Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona", both graduates in Environmental Sciences. It was published simultaniously in English and Spanish.
This environmental project consists in comparing two areas with similar problems, e.g. two islands, fairly isolated and with one predominant economic activity: tourism.
We will study how the natural resources have influenced tourism and population and conversely, how people have influenced the natural resources of the islands.
Our aim is to compare both systems, and we hope the comparison will give rise to improvements related to tourism and environment, studying the solutions adopted on both islands, and if possible creating new solutions for actual problems.
